Thank you for visiting this site and for your interest in children throughout the world who need families.
We have well-established, fully accredited international programs in nearly a dozen countries. Last year, more than 600 children from China, Korea, India, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, and Russia were adopted through our international adoption programs. Since the mid-1960s when CHSFS opened its first international program, nearly 12,000 children from 23 countries have been adopted by families that worked with CHSFS. We encourage you to learn about each CHSFS program and the children waiting for families.
Our bilingual and bicultural specialists have extensive country-specific knowledge and valuable experience working with our reputable in-country representatives who share CHSFS’ commitment to finding families for children. Your needs, as well as children’s needs, are effectively served by our team of adoption professionals. You, with CHSFS' international teams, can look forward to adopting a child who needs you. Together, we will do this! You can count on our caring attention.
Since 2005, when CHSFS became affiliated with Adoption Service Information Agency (ASIA), a non-profit adoption agency based in Silver Spring, Maryland, families can receive home study and post placement services in the District of Colombia, Virginia, and Maryland. Families living in these areas can contact ASIA directly about these services and our international programs at 301-587-7068.
CHSFS is deeply committed to finding families for children who are older, at-risk, in sibling groups, or who have special medical or developmental needs. We maintain an active Waiting International Child Program in many of the countries listed below.
Why Consider Adopting a Waiting Child?
By adopting a waiting child, your mind and heart will open in ways you never imagined! Every day, we talk to families that started the adoption process wanting to adopt a child with few or no health needs, but as they prepared for adoptive parenthood, these same families realized that they have the patience, flexibility, sense of humor, commitment and deep love that it takes to choose and parent a waiting child.
On the practical side, families may find their time-in-process reduced as the process for waiting children is often streamlined, thus shortened. Often we find the country’s program restrictions and guidelines are more flexible, relaxed for families adopting a waiting child. The country may waive a portion of its program fees to increase the likelihood of finding a family for a child. CHSFS also offers a nominal fee reduction for all adoptions of waiting children. There may also be scholarships available, and families report receiving financial aid in the form of loans and grants from needs-specific support organizations.
If we cannot adopt, how can we help find families for waiting children?
Help by contributing to our International Adoption Assistance (IAA) Fund. Families who are in every way qualified to provide a loving home, but need financial assistance to surmount the costs, receive support from our IAA Fund.
How can we help care for children who may never be adopted?
Our International Child Welfare (ICW) Fund is designed specifically to help waiting children by elevating their quality of life. Some go into foster families or receive special attention within their orphanages. Orphanages use this fund to teach children a trade, provide equipment, build everything from barns to computer labs. Our ICW efforts positively affect the lives of children in the following countries: Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Russia, China, India, Ethiopia, Korea & Vietnam.
