Facts about  Torticollis

Torticollis is a condition that tightens the muscles of the neck, pulling the head to one side. Birth trauma or poor positioning in the womb can cause congenital torticollis. With children from orphanages, torticollis can also be caused by the child laying in the same position for too many hours.

Challenges
Treatment
  • With treatment, these children have an excellent outcome, even when treatment has been delayed for years.
  • Treatment involves physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the damaged muscles in the neck. Sometimes an infant wears a collar to straighten the head. Early treatment provides the best results, but children can be treated for torticollis up to the age of 18.
  • Children with torticollis can recover completely with physical therapy.
