Facts about  Meningocele

Meningocele is a type of spina bifida. In these cases the spinal cord develops normally, however the meninges (protection covering around the spinal cord) protrudes from an opening in the vertebrae. The protrusion is called the meningocele.

The exact cause of meningocele is unknown. Researchers have stated a number of factors that may contribute to the disorder, namely nutrition and environmental factors.

Challenges
  • Symptoms of meningocele can vary. Some will experience little or no systems of spina bifida, others may have incomplete paralysis with urinary and bowel dysfunction. Most commonly this form of spina bifida can be repaired with little or no damage to the nerve pathways as the spinal cord remains intact.

  • Treatment
  • The most important element of treatment of children with meningocele is to prevent infection. Infection can develop through the tissue of the defect on the spine. Another important treatment is to protect the exposed protrusion from additional injury or trauma. Most children with meningocele undergo surgery within the first few days of their life. The surgery is to close the defect and prevent infection.
