Facts about  Hemifacial Microsomia

Hemifacial microsomia is a common facial birth defect. The development of the face is affected, with one side of the face may appearing smaller than the other. The eye, ear, and jaw may be smaller and the affected ear may have decreased hearing. Cases can range from mild, barely noticeable differences to extreme abnormalities.

Challenges
  • Hemifacial microsomia may result in weakened facial muscles on the affected side, and physical and speech therapy may help strengthen these muscles.
  • Treatment
  • When the child is older, surgery may be used to correct irregularities, and the condition may require dental intervention. Hearing aids can help increase hearing ability and orthodontic treatment can improve chewing problems due to an uneven jaw.
  • This condition does not affect the child’s growth, development, or intellect. These beautiful children can and do lead normal lives!
