UPDATE 10/11/07: RainbowKids.com joins with other organizations and agencies in cautioning families who wish to adopt from Guatemala at this time. Please research this program and any agencies thoroughly before committing to the adoption of a child from Guatemala.
Children Available:
Most people choose Guatemala for the availability of infants. There are, however, orphanages filled with children who are toddlers and school aged. Very few people adopt these older children, and they are thus left with few options as they age. If you are open to the adoption of a toddler or older child, please share this with your adoption agency
Parent Qualifications:
Couples between 21 and 60, married at least one year and single women between 25 and 60 may apply, as well as families who already have children. Persons previously divorced are also accepted.
Travel:
Travel to Guatemala to complete the adoption is usually 4 days total.
Timeline:
A referral of an infant is usually received within one day to 2 months of a completed dossier. Once a referral is accepted, it then takes between 6-9 months before the adoption may be completed.
Tips:To get started, please read the RainbowKids Adoption Guide (left menu) first. The next step is to contact and compare agencies. You may easily do this by using the Contact Wizard on our website. Receiving feedback about agencies from an online discussion group is always helpful as well. Finally, when you bring your child home, be sure and send your story to RainbowKids. We love hearing from proud new families!
