Facts about  Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a term used to define an array of physical disabilities that do not progress and are not due to a contagious disease. Cerebral palsy occurs because of damage to the motor control center of the brain, whether this happens during pregnancy, at the time of birth, or later on in life.

Challenges
  • Children with Cerebral Palsy are most often of normal intelligence.
  • CP does not worsen and treatment is available to manage its symptoms. CP can affect any combination of arms and legs, as well as the head and trunk.
  • Treatment
  • Physical and occupational therapies can help strengthen or relax affected muscles, and adaptive equipment and mobility aids can help the child function independently.
  • With therapy and adaptive equipment, these youngsters can enjoy relatively normal lives. They have normal life expectancies, and those with milder forms of CP have few outward signs of the condition.
